Chris Martineau is our lawyer and we have worked together for the past 5 years. From the moment we (my husband and I) started working together, the thing that was apparent and that we respected most about Chris was his honesty and knowledge. He did not mince words or waste time. As time went on, his integrity was clearly transparent as well. We are extremely fortunate to work with Chris.

A serious multi-vehicle crash closed a portion of U.S. Highway 51 in Columbia County, Wisconsin, on the morning of August 11, 2026. The collision involved a cement mixer, two pickup trucks, and a teenage driver who was hospitalized with serious injuries. Crashes involving commercial vehicles of this size often raise legal questions that ordinary car accidents do not.

What Happened on Highway 51

According to the Columbia County Sheriff's Office, a 16-year-old girl from Randolph was driving a 2006 Chevrolet pickup southbound on Highway 51 when she crossed the center line. Her pickup struck a cement mixer driven by a 36-year-old man from Wyocena, and was then hit by a 2022 Ram pickup driven by a 63-year-old man from Stoughton. The teen was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, and investigators believe inattentive driving was a factor.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation reported that the crash occurred around 8:30 a.m. near County Highway K in the Town of Leeds, and Highway 51 remained closed between CTH K and CTH DM/Ramsey Road for roughly three hours.

Details were reported by WMTV 15 News in Madison.

Why Commercial Trucks Change the Analysis

A cement mixer is not an ordinary vehicle. It is a heavy commercial truck, and when one is involved in a collision, the investigation typically looks well beyond the drivers at the scene. Even when a passenger vehicle crosses the center line, questions remain about speed, braking distance, load weight, and whether the commercial driver had any opportunity to avoid or reduce the impact.

Our Wisconsin truck accident lawyer reviews several categories of evidence in cases like this one:

  • Crash reconstruction data and the official sheriff's report
  • The commercial truck's maintenance and inspection records
  • The driver's qualification file and hours behind the wheel
  • Onboard electronic data, which carriers can overwrite within weeks
  • Witness statements and any available video from the corridor

Commercial carriers are also subject to federal safety rules administered by the FMCSA, which govern vehicle maintenance, driver fitness, and cargo requirements. Compliance records often become central evidence in these claims.

Fault in Wisconsin is rarely all or nothing. The state applies a comparative negligence system, so an injured person may still recover damages even when they carry a share of responsibility, provided that share does not reach the legal threshold. This makes a careful, early investigation important in any crash involving a big rig or other commercial vehicle.

Speaking With an Attorney After a Truck Crash

Injuries from collisions with cement mixers, semis, and other large trucks tend to be severe, and recovery costs can extend for years. Medical bills, lost income, and long-term care needs all factor into what a claim may be worth. Anyone hurt in a crash like the one on Highway 51 benefits from understanding their rights before speaking with an insurance carrier.

If you or a family member was hurt in a collision with a commercial truck, our Wisconsin truck accident lawyer is available to review what happened and explain your options. Contact Johnston | Martineau PLLP to discuss your case.
