Personal injury lawyers from a law firm such as Seber Bulger Law  handle cases from a variety of situations and settings. Depending on the facts of the accident or incident, victims may be able to receive compensation resulting from a settlement or judgment. Here are six of the most common types of personal injury lawsuits and examples of injuries that plaintiffs experience.

1. Car Accidents

One of the most common problems resulting from a car accident is whiplash, a type of neck injury. Often caused by rear-end collisions, whiplash can really affect victims’ quality of life because it can hinder work and sleep.

2. Slip and Falls

Statistics indicate that 1 in 3 people over age 65 will experience a slip and fall accident. Hip fractures account for a majority of injuries resulting from falls.

3. Medical Malpractice

Medical malpractice lawsuits target healthcare professionals who may have provided inadequate care due to negligence or error. There are several reasons cited for malpractice but one of the most frequent is wrong diagnosis or failure to diagnose.

4. Defamation

Individuals who publish false statements about other people or entities could be sued for defamation. Usually, the injury to the plaintiff is a ruined reputation that affects profits or employment. One published case was Beef Products, Inc. (BPI) v. Walt Disney, which resulted in BPI laying off 700 employees due to damaging opinions stated by an ABC reporter. BPI received a settlement from Walt Disney, Co. in 2017.

5. Dog Bites

The CDC reports that 1 in 5 dog bite injuries require medical attention. Victims are often treated for infections, scarring, punctures, and nerve damage. States have either a “one bite” law, which prevents liability for one incident, or a strict liability law, making dog owners liable no matter what the situation.

6. Workplace

If workers perform repetitive movements with their hands and wrists, they can experience a gradual onset of carpal tunnel. Affecting 3-6% of adults, carpal tunnel causes tissue to swell and put pressure on the tunnel nerve in the wrist. The symptoms include pain, tingling, numbness and can hinder the ability to grasp objects. Women are 3 times more likely to receive a diagnosis than men.

These examples are not the only settings or circumstances that may be eligible for a personal injury lawsuit. To gain a better understanding of the litigation process, contact a personal injury lawyer in your area who can answer your questions and determine if you may have a case to take to court.
